Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to pursue her artistic talents and be instilled by art. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could commit her time to writing, reading or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her that art was an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was well-educated and encouraged that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights marches that were historic across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time she spent there to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was in school. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house that one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move as a publicist. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in the small studio that she worked in after graduating from college. In 1999, she established her own company of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency has launched a wide range of networks for promotion and lifestyle, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
